Why I Started BYOB

A platform to give back, inspire, and shape tomorrow’s designers

BYOB was born from my belief that design leadership extends beyond products—it’s about nurturing the next generation. The event is built to:

  • Share design knowledge with the wider community

  • Enhance Tata 1mg’s visibility in the design and product ecosystem

  • Network with emerging talent for future opportunities

  • Create leadership roles for in-house designers, empowering them to moderate sessions and step into the spotlight

This balance of community learning and organizational growth has made BYOB a win-win for attendees and Tata 1mg alike.

Naming the Movement

Naming the Movement

From brainstorming to BYOB: breaking biases with a design party

In Gurugram, “BYOB” usually means Bring Your Own Booze—a phrase tied to fun, energy, and togetherness. We wanted to capture that same vibe for design: fun, social, and serious about craft.

After rejecting names like UXplosion, D-Meet, Design Circuit, and Design Diagnostics, we landed on BYOB—Break Your Old Bias. The name perfectly reflects our mission: challenging myths, breaking old thinking patterns, and seeing design with fresh perspective.

The BYOB Experience

The BYOB Experience

A design party where learning meets play

BYOB events are designed like an immersive experience, not just talks. Each gathering includes:

  • Group problem-solving with industry expert on real-world challenges

  • UX myth-busting sessions to separate facts from misconceptions

  • App critiques to sharpen analytical and craft skills

  • Speed networking to connect job seekers with hiring managers

The vibe is fun, energetic, and community-driven—participants describe it as a design party where you grow while you play.

Branding with a Twist

Branding with a Twist

Mixing creativity into every detail

We extended the “design party” theme into the event’s internal branding. Teams were named like cocktails—Design Colada, Idea Bomb, Cosmo Creator, UX on the Rocks, Design Sour, and Design on the Beach.

Roles were reimagined too:

  • The Host (Event Opener): Welcoming and kicking things off

  • The Chef (Keynote Speaker): Serving the main course of insights

  • The Bartender (Moderator): Mixing conversations and keeping flow smooth

  • The Cocktail Shaker (Moderator’s Partner): Supporting the moderator in balancing discussions

  • The DJ (Sound & Music): Setting the mood with energy and vibe

  • The Crew (Volunteers): Ensuring smooth flow, from logistics to activities

This playful yet professional branding helped create a welcoming culture where participants instantly felt part of something bigger.

Partnering to empower young designers

BYOB has been powered by the incredible support of VOXAGO, a Delhi NCR design community that organizes events and workshops with a similar mission: preparing young designers for the realities of the industry and clearing misconceptions. As our organizing and ticketing partner, VOXAGO amplified our reach and ensured that every event ran seamlessly.
